For instance, in Carrara if I bake a terrain shader in a grayscale image its not as detailed as baking into the direct normal map. Normal maps might just depend on the output of you modeling app too. You could rotate a normal map in a paint program but the colors would not change - so, you did not really rotate the vectors in the normal map and you only rotated the vectors position. This is because you can manipulate a grayscale map easier in a paint program. Though, in many instances, people just like to use gray scale images instead of normal maps.

Some apps bake normal maps too which can be used in conjunction with a similar model of lower vertex count. Cheetah3D is a lean, fast and elegant 3D modelling, rendering and animation tool for Mac OS X with an easy learning. So, people bake its output into a texture. In other situations, your modeling application might have very complicated shaders that you could not reproduce in your application. Might make UV stuff a little more easy because you can map different textures in an easier way then combine them all. So, if there is a way to limit the binding thats a plus. Just by leaving on ambient lighting such that there are no shadows casted. Some game veterans poo poo on lightmaping - they consider it hack job.Īnother approach is to unify all your textures into one texture map. But for still scenes this might be the way to go. The drawback is in the application one cannot move lights/shadows. Thus, the application is faster because you are not calculating lighting anymore. but a 15 min clip with the same setup might be worth the bake time.

a 2 second clip with an insanely complicated node setup is prolly not worth baking. Rather than calculate lighting in your application people just burn the lighting into the texture. BUT, baking procedural textures can take a long time, so its a judgement call on which is ultimately faster. I’ve not mentioned the Collada import as I have no idea what Collada is really used for.Texture baking is an easy way to make lightmaps.

BAKING TEXTURES IN CHEETAH3D UPDATE

If anyone can enlighten me, I’d really appreciate it! UI UpdateĪ UI update is a scary thing for me! Does it mean that my tutorial that are all done in v5 and 6 will need updating? I have no idea at this stage. I’ve seen rendering to layers before in Strata but I don’t think this is what Martin is talking about. I’m not saying they don’t exist but it’s not something that I’ve used and I struggle to even understand how it would work. I’ve not seen layers in any 3D application before. Probably the most intriguing feature on the list. It’s an absolute must if you’re doing any organic modelling. The softer selection has less influence but whatever you do (move, scale) still has an impact. If you’ve never used it, it’s quite hard to explain but I’ll try anyway:- Soft selection allows you to select part of a model and then take an additional softer selection of it’s surrounding points. I first encountered them in Silo and what a great feature it is. Soft selections is something I’ve personally requested.

BAKING TEXTURES IN CHEETAH3D TV

Initially I was just thinking about things like TV screens, but actually it could go way further than this. The possibilities here seem pretty endless. I can see a huge benefit here though and it’s something I’ve seen requested in the forum a good few times over the years. I think this is because I largely produce still images with Cheetah3D.

BAKING TEXTURES IN CHEETAH3D MOVIE

Personally I’ve never really needed movie textures. I can actually see this changing the way I model completely. It’s very hard to move on and continue modelling after you’ve used a boolean at present. Booleans have never been particularly useful in Cheetah3D as the meshes that you end up with are quite messy.

Could we finally see the much requested render preview? NGon Booleans My knowledge of rendering isn’t the best and I’m not sure what to expect here. There’s a few in there that I’m pretty excited about, and I must confess I do know of some other features that are planned too but I’m sworn to secrecy on them! New Renderer Whilst there’s no release date yet, the new feature list does sound impressive… Cheetah3D creator Martin Wengenmayer appeared on the Cheetah3D forum recently and listed some of the features that we can expect to see in the upcoming Cheetah3D Version 7.
